Our Tip of the Week: Passwords are becoming the old-school way to keep hackers out of your valuable online assets. New technology embraces physical verification (such as a fingerprint) to verify your identity online. Most websites also offer two-step verification (a password and a phone number) to get into accounts. But what happens when your loved ones need access to these accounts after your death?
How-to Suggestion: Ask about an emergency contact option. For physical or two-step verification accounts, giving your passwords out to a trusted loved one isn’t enough. When you give them emergency contact access to the account, you ensure they have access in the event of your death, no matter what. For two-step verification accounts, simply add your loved one’s number to the emergency phone number list, and give him or her the password to your account. For physical verification, ask the security source about giving your loved one additional access to your account. This simple step could save your loved ones hours of frustration, while keeping your accounts as safe as they can be.
